Stokkeby

Stokkeby may due to the many small winding roads resemble Ommel which for many persons is difficult to know one's way around in. The village has mainly smaller farms but there is also a smithy and a garage. From Stokkeby you can drive to the south to Store Rise and Olde or to the north to Ærøskøbing. The village itself is situated at the end of Noret (the cove) reaching in from Borgnæs. There are several place names around Stokkeby such as Lammehuse (the Lambs houses) and Snekkemose (Ship moor).
Olde
Standing on the highest point of Ærø which is at Olde Mølle (mill), you have a wonderful panorama view over most of the island and the archipelago and also over the Baltic Sea where it in clear weather is possible to see all the way to northern Germany and the coast of Als. The old mill has been demolished whereas the newer building on the site now acts as a course building (job factory). The village is situated along the road and reaches from Tingstedet at Store Rise to the crossroads at the Mill; -from here it joins the road to Tranderup. There is a smaller road parallel to the main road for a distance. The village is mainly characterised by small farms, but there is also a smithy and a company for feeding stuff.
Tranderup
When you arrive at Tranderup and head to the west it is not easy to see when you are in the village called Vindeballe, as the two villages are joining at the inn and the church. The inhabitants of the village live mainly from farming but formerly there was some small industry. Still there are a few shops in Tranderup and also a car wash located in the old dairy. From Tranderup you can drive down to Borgnæs or southward along the coast road which leads either to Risemark via Lindsbjerg to Drejet or to the west to Bregninge.
Vindeballe
Vindeballe reaches from Tranderup, where the two villages come apart on the middle of the road between the church and the inn. The village itself lies along the main road while there is a parallel road on the south side which can be entered at the inn or at the opposite end from the main road coming from Bregninge. Farming is the predominant occupation but there is one store selling carpets and wallpaper and a service station. From Vindeballe roads are leading to Ærøskøbing via Borgnæs and to the south you can drive along the coast road to Rise or Bregninge, where you can take a detour to the cliffs at Voderup klinter.
Lille Rise
Lille Rise is situated high with a beautiful view over the archipelago. The village is placed along the road but reaches also down towards Grønnæs where the old ferry to Kragnæs used to sail from before Noret vas reclaimed. In recent years the slopes, where the Government has bought up some land, have been planted with wood. It is mainly farming that characterise the locality but a cement factory is also found here. When you head in south westerly direction you pass Torup or Dunkær on the way to Store Rise, -and heading south east the road leads past Drejet to Marstal. En route it is also possible to branch off just before Drejet where you can drive across Noret to Ronæs and Græsvænge.
Store Rise
Store Rise is situated on the southern part of the road behind the church. In former times the church in Store Rise was also used by the population from Marstal. The village consists mainly of farms and here some of the biggest farms on Ærø are found. If you drive towards the Baltic you end up at Strandvejen where it is possible to pass through Lindsbjerg to Drejet or to Oldemark and further drive along the cycle path which leads all the way to Bregninge. En route small roads or tracks lead down to the beach where there are fine facilities for bathing and swimming. Behind the church is found one of the many antiquities is found and it has later been used as thingstead.
Dunkær
Dunkær is situated at the main road but is split so it is possible to pass behind the village. Here we find the "Falkstation" (salvage corps) as well as some small shops. The village has some farms which have their land outside the village. The village has always been busy as the people from Marstal had to pass Dunkær to come to the church in Rise. From Dunkær there are roads via Torup to Lille Rise and to the south to Lindsbjerg or via Bro to Drejet and further on to Marstal. You may of cause also drive to the west via the coast road or the main road which passes Store Rise.
